Robert WheelhouseRobert R. Wheelhouse, 88, of Rushville died at 1:50 a.m. Nov. 5, 2017, at the Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born April 21, 1929, in Beardstown, a son of Raymond and Elta Unland Wheelhouse. He married Wanda Gust on Aug. 8, 1950, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Robert S. (and Pamela) Wheelhouse of Barrington, James (and Cheryl) Wheelhouse of Rushville and Bill (and Margie) Wheelhouse of Springfield; one brother, Dale (and Margaret) Wheelhouse of Rushville; one sister, Shirley Bartlow of Rushville; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel Ross Wheelhouse; and one brother, Donald Wheelhouse.

He was a life-long resident of Schuyler County, and was well known for his contributions to the community. He worked in the family business, Wheelhouse Coal Company, until home delivered coal became a thing of the past. He then took a correspondence course in electronics. Rushville residents and visitors on “the square” will remember his family business, Wheelhouse TV, from which he retired in 1990 and his later employment at Moreland & Devitt Drug Store until 2016.

He served as treasurer for the Rushville/Industry School Board. He was very active in the First Presbyterian Church on a local and national level where he was elected to the Presbyterian Church General Assembly in 1980.

He was a Boy Scout leader, president of the Schuyler Arts Council and president and co-founder of the H.E.L.P. Center.

Visitation will be held Friday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville from 5-7 p.m.
