Verne E. Williams, 93, of Jacksonville, formerly of Beardstown, died at 7:23 p.m. Feb. 26, 2010, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born Nov. 25, 1916, in Beardstown, a son of George and Maime Dunn Williams. He married Lulu Fisher in April of 1951 in Astoria. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2006.

He also was preceded in death by one brother, Dunn Williams; and two sisters, Mary Green and his twin, Verna Shaw.

There are no immediate family members surviving.

He was a Sergeant in the United States Air Force serving Squadron A 621 during World War II.

He worked maintenance at Beardstown Post Office for 38 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of United States Civil Service Commission, Beardstown American Legion and Beardstown Methodist Church.

Graveside services were held Monday at Astoria Cemetery with Bob Spencer officiating. Military rites were conducted by Astoria American Legion Post #25. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
