Howard Walton

Howard J. Walton, 78, of Astoria died at 3:50 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Astoria Gardens & Rehab Center.

He was born July 17, 1925, in Jacksonville, the son of Howard and Edith Pippenger Walton. He married Leora Gladys Dillon on Dec. 25, 1947, in Monmouth. He later married Marilyn Van Fossen on May 25, 1979, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are four sons, James (and Paula) of Peoria Heights, Dale (and Elizabeth Ann) and Michael (and Bonnie), both of Peoria, and Roger (and Shelly) of East Peoria; two daughters, Cheryl Husky and Linda (and Gerald) Wagner, both of Peoria; two stepdaughters, Nancy Richbark of Macomb and Karen (and Kevin) Danner of Table Grove; 17 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Russell; one granddaughter, Angela Husky; and one sister, Helen Peacock.

A member of United Auto Workers Local 974, he was a crane operator and floor checker at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He also taught dance classes in Bryant, Canton and Ipava for several years.

He was a member of Canton Moose Lodge.

He also was a member of Woodland Church of the Brethren in Astoria, where he served as head usher.

Services were held Sunday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. Kevin Kessler officiating. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery.
