Harold VaughnHarold D. Vaughn, 94, of Canton, formerly of Astoria, died at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 26, 2016, at his home.

He was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Ipava, the son of Guy and Leona Smith Vaughn. He married Betty Opper on Jan. 1, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. She preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2015.

He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Sue Vaughn.

Surviving are one son, Gene (and Judy) Vaughn of Washington; one sister, Dorothy Carver of Garland, Texas; two grandchildren, Suzie (and Kevin) Root and Mike (and Rebecca) Vaughn; and five great-grandchildren.

He was a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1943-45, serving in New Guinea and the Philippines.

He played semi-pro football for the Canton Jets.

He started as a barber in 1946, working first for his dad. He barbered until the age of 90.

He was a member of Astoria American Legion, Vermont Masonic Lodge and Astoria United Methodist Church. He also served on the Astoria School Board.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Vince Opper officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services on Thursday. Burial will be held in Astoria Cemetery with military rites provided by the Astoria American Legion.
