WALTER C. “SONNY” VAN ORDER

Walter "Sonny" Van OrderWalter C. "Sonny" Van Order, 73, of Vermont died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Astoria Gardens & Rehab Center in Astoria.

He was born Feb. 9, 1932, in the Flatwoods neighborhood, northwest of Vermont in Schuyler County, the son of William Walter and Christine (Chenoweth) Van Order. He married Carolyn Barkley Newcombe on June 29, 1985, in Vermont. She survives.

Also surviving are one stepdaughter, Michelle (and Joseph) Rossmiller of Macomb; and four step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one stepson, Michael Newcombe; and one half sister, Ann Meyers.

He was a 20-year Navy veteran, retiring in 1971.

He was the bar manager for Carroll Rankin American Legion Post #26 in Vermont, where he also was a past commander and had currently been serving as adjutant. He was a lifetime member of Lewistown VFW Post 5001.

He was a member of the American Bowling Congress for over 30 years and went to the National ABC tournaments for over 20 years.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. today in Ipava Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by his American Legion Post. Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava is in charge of arrangements.
