Henry TurnerHenry W. Turner, 93, of Rushville died at 1:58 p.m. Oct. 25, 2020, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Woodstock Township, Schuyler County, a son of George and Vurnice Bedenbender Turner. He married Virdella Louise Watts on Nov. 21, 1948, in Mount Sterling. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1999.

He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Vergie Lue Diseron and Marie Turner; and one infant brother, Lewis Everett Turner.

Surviving are two daughters, Denise (and Dale) Pindell and Sue Richardson, both of Rushville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He attended rural Schuyler County grade schools. He left home at age 14 to see the world, working for Jess Thompson and Lloyd Theater. He then joined the Navy in 1945 and trained at the Great Lakes Naval Training Facility. He went on to serve as an Electrician’s Mate aboard the USS Puget Sound. He was a movie projection operator on the ship and saw Japan after the bombing.

He returned home to Schuyler County in 1946 where he went to Rushville High School and graduated with the class of 1948. He worked for Miller Equipment, Quinn’s Service, Mickelberry’s Packing Plant and Peabody Key Shop. He was a Federal Licensed Surface Mine Electrician for Amax Sunspot Mine in Vermont and Cedar Creek and Triad mines in Camden. He retired in 1998 and then returned to work in 1999 for Rushville Truck Lines. He was a self employed refrigeration, machinist, welder/fabricator.

He was a member of Schuyler American Legion Post #4 for 65 years, United Mine Workers of America and Operating Engineers.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Rushville City Cemetery with Mr. David Haney officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Schuyler American Legion Post #4 and an U.S. Navy honor detail. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville.
