Frances TingleyFrances I. Tingley, 86, of Vermont died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.

She was born July 2, 1919, in Eldorado Township, McDonough County near Vermont, a daughter of Justus and Bessie Miller Herron. She married Harold "Benny" Stambaugh in 1935. She later married Merle Tingley on June 10, 1950, in Astoria. He died April 21, 2002.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Eldon Stambaugh; one sister, Doris Ellen Smith; and three brothers, Clyde, Russell and Jack Herron.

Surviving are two sons, Larry (and Sherri) Stambaugh of Concord, Calif., and Gordon (and Cindy) Tingley of Beardstown; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and one niece, Bessie Smith, who was raised in the Tingley home.

Frances worked at the PX and service clubs at Camp Ellis near Table Grove. She also worked at various restaurants in Vermont and was head cook for VIT Schools for nine years.

She was a member of Vermont Christian Church, where she was Sunday school superintendent and taught seventh- and eighth-grade Sunday school. She taught the Homebuilders Class and was a member of the Circle of Love. She also served three terms as deaconess.

Services were held Friday at her church with Mike Courson and Tim Gilliland officiating. Graveside services were held Saturday at Vermont Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Beardstown Christian Academy, Cass-Schuyler Hospice or her church.
