Herschel Dean Thompson, 76, of Lewistown died at 10:29 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born Oct. 21, 1928, in rural Ipava, a son of Earl and Belle Rodgers Thompson. He married Nancy L. Bainter on April 5, 1956, in Lewistown. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Brian (and Melissa) of Lewistown; two daughters, Sara (and Lindell) Bainter of Lewistown and Susan Thompson of Ipava; one sister, Dora Baker of Smithfield; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

He worked at the Caterpillar Inc. East Peoria plant for 30 years, retiring in July 1991. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 974.

A Korean War Army veteran, he served from 1951 to 1953. He was a member of Lewistown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5001.

He was a member of Lewistown United Methodist Church.

Services were held Tuesday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Rev. Bill Bunnage officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown, where military rites were accorded by his VFW Post and Lewistown American Legion Bishop Post 1.

Memorials may be made to his church or Lewistown Rescue Squad.
