He was born March 11, 1941, in Beardstown, a son of Denny and Leona Taylor Self.
He married Patsy K. Bollinger on Nov. 19, 1960, in Browning. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, James Self Jr. (and Sandy) of Raymond; 10 grandchildren, Casey Morgan (and Jesse), Abby Mitchell (and Cameron), Alyson Harlacher (and Jason), Heather Apps, Jennifer Archer (and Justin), Leslie Berardinelli (and Dominic), Kristin Buchanan (and Joel), Marc Gaines (and Chelsea Mathena), Kelsie Harms (and Isaiah), Katie Uzun (and Ersin); and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Pamela Gaines and Brenda Reische; one brother, Francis Self; four sisters, Mary Thrower, Audrey Smyers, Edith Lanier and Clair Mahnken.
He worked at Oscar Mayer, co-owned Jim’s Marine then did carpentry for several years and worked at True Value.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Beardstown City Cemetery with Pastor Matt Haberman officiating. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society.
