Martha Ann Marshall Sloan, 87, died May 1, 2021, at Sugar Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Normal.
She was born Feb. 22, 1934, in Houston, Texas, a daughter of Reverend Benjamin Darden and Volree Lucas Hodge. She married Robert Marland Marshall on March 30, 1956. She married Robert E. Sloan on March 8, 1997. He preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Kathryn Ann; one brother, Benjamin Darden Hodge Jr.; and one sister, Mary Kay Putnam.
Surviving are four children, Karen Elizabeth (Albert Bussone), Robert Kent (Heather Sweney), Beverly Marie and Philip Darden; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Her family moved to El Paso, Texas, in 1944 and started Bethel Temple Assembly of God Church. After graduating from high school, she attended Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo.
Robert was stationed in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss in El Paso. They moved back to Illinois to start their family and continue the legacy of Marshall Farms where they eventually established a home outside of Ipava.
She was active as a choir director for children at Berean Christian Church and facilitated the Christmas programs. She also served as a room mother at the Ipava Elementary School. She was a dedicated homemaker. She also was a longtime member of the PEO Sisterhood Chapter C and was a past president.
Later in her life, she began a successful career selling insurance, annuities and securities.
Services will begin with a visitation at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria on Thursday, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial at Pennington Point Cemetery immediately after.
