James Surratt Sr.James Richard Surratt Sr., 70, of Rushville died at 12:37 p.m. Feb. 21, 2019, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born April 8, 1948, in Jacksonville, a son of Melvin Sylvester Sr. and Helen Virginia Alexander Surratt. He married Millie Jane Hull on Aug. 29, 1969, in Virginia, Ill. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, James R. Surratt Jr. of Rushville, Jerry A. Surratt of Chandlerville and Jesse L. Surratt of Pleasant View; three brothers, Melvin S. (and Linda) Surratt of Jerseyville, Donald W. Surratt of Ashland and Danny R. (and Rose) Surratt of Anthony, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jackie and Emil Surratt; and two sisters, Kathy Long and Darlene Marshall.

He graduated from Ashland with the class of 1967. He then served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1967-69. He worked at Oscar Mayer in Beardstown until their closing. He then worked at Bill’s Truck Wash in Beardstown and at Dot Foods in Mount Sterling. He retired from NTN Bower in Macomb.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Larry DeShea officiating. Burial was in Chapin Cemetery with military honors by a U.S. Navy Honors Detail and the Combined Veteran’s Ceremonial Team.
