Joyce SchaferJoyce Schafer, 92, of Springfield, formerly of Rushville, died at 9:45 a.m. July 2, 2018, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

She was born June 17, 1926, in Liverpool, England, a daughter of Brook Parkinson and Ethel Cowx Hoult. She married Charles Rudolph Schafer on Aug. 5, 1951, in Rushville. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2012.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Philip Schafer; and one sister, Margaret Hoult.

Surviving are one son, Anthony Schafer of Gambrills, Md.; one daughter, Caroline (and David) Young of Springfield; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, Kylee Hester.

She was a secretary at the head office of the Royal Insurance in Liverpool. She also served in the Women’s Royal Navy Service during World War II as a secretary. She worked for the Assistant Director of W.R.N.S. in London at St. James Park, which was their headquarters. She was a sales representative for the World Book Encyclopedia and also an insurance agent for the Independent Order of Foresters.

Before her marriage she came to America on the “M.V. Britannic” on June 9, 1951. She formed the British Brides Club many years ago and it still exists today.

She was a member of Rushville First Presbyterian Church where she had served as a deacon. She was a former Cub Scout leader.

Funeral services were held Saturday at her church with Mr. David Haney officiating. Inurnment followed in Rushville City Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville was in charge of arrangements.
