Charles SchaferCharles Rudolph Schafer, 87, of Rushville died at 8:15 a.m. March 30, 2012, at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

He was born on Feb. 1, 1925, in Rushville, the son of Karl and Mathilde Rode Schafer. He married Joyce Hoult on Aug. 5, 1951, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Philip (and Sherry) Schafer of Westminster, Md., and Anthony Schafer of Gambrills, Md.; one daughter; Caroline (and David) Young of Springfield; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He graduated from Rushville High School in 1942 and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb for three years.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46 earning the rank of T/5 with the 4289 Quartermaster Railhead Co. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Medals.

He worked with his father as a butcher and grocer at Schafer AG Market in Rushville for 22 years.

He was a member of Rushville First Presbyterian Church and Schuyler Post #4 American Legion.

Services were held Monday at Rushville First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Steve Akins officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery with military honors conducted by U.S. Army Honors Detail and Schuyler American Legion Post #4. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville was in charge of arrangements.
