Roger SmithRoger William Smith, 72, of Chatham, formerly of Rushville, died at noon April 14, 2018, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 29, 1945, in Rushville, a son of Clinton Smith and Virginia Walker Smith Bryant. He married Carol Hillyer in Rushville. They later divorced.

Surviving are one daughter, Tara (and Greg) McDaniel of Franklin; long-time significant other, Sandy Rahling of Chatham; one sister, Becky (and Vic) Menely of Rushville; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gary Smith, Dick Smith and infant Sterling Sidney Smith.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Jet Aircraft Mechanic during the Vietnam War from 1962-66. After his discharge, he made his home in California and worked for United Air Lines for several years. He later moved back to Illinois and was hired as a jet mechanic for the State of Illinois.

He was a life member of the Chatham VFW Post #476, where he served as state photographer for several years. He was a former member of the Chatham Jaycees.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Mr. David Haney officiating. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. Visitation will be held one hour before services.

Memorials may be made to Schuyler American Legion Post #4 Avenue of Flags or Chatham VFW Post #476.
