Gary SmithGary Lee “Cab Driver” Smith, 73, of Beardstown died at 4:27 a.m. April 16, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born July 14, 1940, in Macomb, a son of Clinton C. Smith and Virginia Walker-Smith Bryant. He married Zella Mae Avery Saylor on Nov. 27, 1987, in Beardstown. She survives.

Also surviving are four children: Ronnie Lee (and Velvie) Smith of Sunset, Texas, Sterling (and Jeanie) Smith of Muldrow, Okla., and Tamatha Eloise (and Leon Robb) and Gary Edward (and April) Smith, both of Springfield, Mo.; one stepson, Bobby (and Becky) Saylor of Beardstown; one sister, Becky Bryant (and Vic) Menely of Rushville; two brothers, Richard “Dick” (and Linda) Smith of Marissa and Roger (and Sandy) Smith of Chatham; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He worked at various jobs over the years. He retired in 1999 as a security guard in Jacksonville.

He was a member of First Christian Church of Beardstown.

Services were held Saturday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Mike Courson officiating. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Arenzville.
