He was born March 21, 1935, in Frederick, a son of Richard Henry and Mary Louise Hood Stambaugh. He married Royna Lee Meyer on Sept. 4, 1954, in Beardstown. She preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 1988.
He also was preceded in death by an infant brother, Eli Stambaugh.
Surviving are two sons, Richie Stambaugh of Frederick and Michael Stambaugh of Beardstown; two daughters, Mary L. (and Steve) Potter and Nina Stambaugh, both of Frederick; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was a lifelong Bainbridge Township farmer. He worked for the Army Corp of Engineers, was a first mate on several Illinois River tow boats. He also worked for Oscar Mayer Company and Cargill Meat Solutions until retiring.
Cremation has been accorded. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
