Anita ShawgoAnita L. Shawgo, 96, of Springfield, formerly of Rushville, died at 12:53 p.m. Nov. 17, 2016, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Bainbridge Township, Schuyler County, a daughter of Henry A. and Hazel Phar Carroll Lenover. She married Glen Hale in 1936 in Rushville. He is deceased. She later married Aubrey Dean Shawgo in Hernando, Miss., on July 4, 1959. He preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 2000.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Smothers; two sons, Rodney and Jerry Hale; two sisters, Erma Newenham and Rose Ellen Monaco; and three brothers, Junior, Gene and Donald Lenover.

Surviving are three daughters, Bonnie Jansen of Quincy, Sandra (and William) Dragoo of Petersburg and Karen Hale of Springfield; one son, George Hale of Riverton; two sisters, Margurite Greenstreet of Monmouth and Ruby Sipes of Macomb; one stepbrother, Ben Lenover of Monmouth; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She attended Schuyler County Schools. She worked at Culbertson Hospital in Rushville for years. She retired from the State of Illinois (Drivers License Division). She and her late husband, Aubrey, owned and operated the Sunset Motel east of Springfield, which they later converted to apartments. After retiring they moved into Springfield.

She was a member of Springfield West Side Christian Church and a past member of the U and I Sunday School Class. She was an active league bowler for years until her health started to decline.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Fred Fritz officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery.
