Creel Speer

Creel SpeerCreel Speer, 95, of Macomb, formerly of Table Grove, died at 10:26 a.m. Oct. 30, 2014, at McDonough District Hospital.

He was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Ellisville, a son of Tom and Lila Dallefeld Speer. He married Audrey Rawls on Aug. 23, 1941, in Bushnell. She survives.

Also surviving are four children, Carol (and Doug) Baily of Table Grove, Marilyn (and Bob) Hurt of Dakota, Minn., Tom (and Sara) of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Amy (and Steve) Ruebush of Blandinsville; one brother, Kermit Speer of Port Orange, Fla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six siblings, Leota, Eugene, Orvan, Ken and Dean Speer and Eileen Melvin.

After high school in Bushnell, he began farming, but following World War II, he sold the farm and became a merchant. In 1948, he and his brother, Ken, opened Speer’s Grocery in Table Grove. Speer’s Grocery supported Table Grove activities, including Saturday night “free shows” on the square. He retired after 35 years of selling groceries.

He was a 64-year member of Table Grove Community Church where he served on and chaired many committees. He was elected to serve on Table Grove Village Board for 32 years.

After 62 years in Table Grove, he and his wife moved to Wesley Estates in Macomb.

A Celebration of his life was held Sunday at Table Grove Community Church. Burial was in Harris Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
