Audrey Speer

Audrey SpeerAudrey Speer, 97, of Macomb, formerly of Table Grove, died at 7 a.m. Jan. 11, 2018, at Wesley Village Health Care Center.

She was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Dahlgren, a daughter of Robert W. and Noma Turner Rawls. She married Creel Speer on Aug. 23, 1941, in Bushnell. He preceded her in death in October, 2014.

Surviving are four children, Carol (and Doug) Baily of Macomb, Marilyn (and Bob) Hurt of Dakota, Minn., Tom (and Sara) Speer of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Amy (and Steve) Ruebush of Blandinsville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lurene Twaddle and Magnolia Hageman.

Her family moved from Dahlgren to Decatur to Evansville, Ind., and finally to Bushnell where she graduated from high school with the class of ’38. She began playing the piano at age 6 and became quite accomplished performing with her sisters in a string trio. She attended Western “State” (now Western Illinois University) and began teaching school at the one-room Sperry Rural School south of Bushnell where she taught Kindergarten through eighth grades.

She was an active member of Table Grove Community Church where she and Creel became members in 1949. She played the organ there well into her 90th year of life and at one time directed the church choir as well as assisted with church dinners. She was a 60-plus year member of Chapter C of the PEO Sisterhood where she had served as chaplain and other offices.

Upon moving to Wesley Village Estates, she frequently played the piano for Vesper services and other events.

Celebration of Life was held Monday at her church. Burial was in Harris Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
