John StambaughJohn N. Stambaugh, 85, of Browning died at 6:40 p.m. March 27, 2011, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

He was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Macomb, the son of Nelson "Sandy" and Naomi Kelly Stambaugh. He married Virginia E. Aten on June 7, 1950, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, James R. (and Sheila Alexander) Stambaugh of Springfield and John P. (and Jennifer) Stambaugh and Neal K. (and Beth) Stambaugh, both of Browning; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Fred N. Stambaugh.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1944-1946 as a truck driver in the 687th Engineer's Basic Equipment.

He worked in maintenance for the Beardstown Hospital. He was a Schuyler County bus driver for 40 years.

He served as superintendent of Browning Water Works for several years and was owner/operator of Stambaugh's Garage and Towing Service for 50 years, retiring in 2000.

He was a lifetime member of Beardstown VFW.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Matt Haberman officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Browning Cemetery with military rites provided by Beardstown VFW.

Memorials may be made to Browning Methodist Church or Browning Senior Center.
