SOPHIA I. (HAMM) CONNOUR SEXTON

Sophia Sexton

Sophia I. Sexton, 100, of Ipava died at 4:34 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

She was born April 10, 1902, in Lake City, the daughter of Brutus and Maude Sinclair Hamm. She married Victor Connour on Sept. 27, 1922, in Decatur. He died Dec. 10, 1960. She married Gilbert Sexton on Dec. 6, 1967, in Decatur. He died June 6, 1986.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Connour and Paul Connour; one stepson, William Sexton; two stepgrandchildren; and three brothers.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Jean Connour of Ipava, who was her caregiver; two stepsons, Dr. Robert (and Maggie) Sexton of Silver City, N.M., and Dr. Phillip (and Rosie) Sexton of Monmouth; five grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

She worked as a cook and housemother at Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house at Milliken University from 1947 to 1963. She was a cook at Camp Lowden Boy Scout camp in Oregon from 1957 to 1968 and also worked at the ammunition plant in Decatur.

She was a member of Ipava Presbyterian Church, where services were held Monday with Rev. William Bodamer officiating. Burial was in Ipava Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava was in charge of arrangements.
