Retired Lt. Col. Gerald K. Schuman, 78, of Whitney, Texas, formerly of the Peoria area, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Astoria, a son of Harold and Myrtle Stambaugh Schuman. He married Kathryn Earell in September 1945. She died June 20, 1989.

He later married Patricia Kee in June 1997. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Sandra (and Bill) Henry of Cedar Hill, Texas, and Catherine (and Frank) Fisher of Bourbonnais; one stepdaughter, Sherry (and Jerry) Lawson of Lake Dallas, Texas; one brother, Donald (and Helen) of Rushville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A World War II Army Air Forces veteran, he served as a gunner on a B-24 bomber. He was recalled to the Air Force as a commissioned officer in 1961, serving in Louisiana, Turkey, Germany and Vietnam before retiring 1978.

He formerly worked for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria.

He was a member of Church of Christ in Whitney, where services were held on Saturday. Graveside services were held Monday at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas. Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney, Texas, were in charge of arrangements.
