Donald Skiles

The Rev. Donald E. Skiles, 95, of Argyle Lake Nursing Center died there at 5:40 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 1999.

He was born April 22, 1904, in Browning Township, Schuyler County, a son of James Allen and Rosa Ann Stambaugh Skiles. He married Garnet Clark on Nov. 6, 1924, in Browning. She died Oct. 3, 1997.

He also was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Surviving are one daughter, Evangeline (and Ray) Allen of Moorpark, Calif.; one grandson, David Allen of Tyler, Texas; one granddaughter, Joyce Forbes of St. Louis; and one great-grandson.

Ordained by the Assemblies of God, he served as a pastor, evangelist, sectional presbyter, hospital chaplain and nursing home chaplain. In Illinois, he pastored churches in Alto Pass, Buckner, Grafton, Astoria, Rushville and West Point. He and his wife established a new church in Carthage in 1958, which he pastored for 13 years.

In Iowa, he served as a pastor in Mount Ayr; Chariton; Conrad; Grinnell for 12 years; and at a church in Ames that his wife began in 1936. He preached regular radio broadcasts in Marshalltown, Iowa, and Carthage for many years. He semi-retired in Bowen in 1971 but continued to preach and teach Sunday school.

Services were held Saturday at Astoria Assembly of God Church with Revs. Steve Adamson and Clifford Parry officiating. Burial was in Ridgeville Cemetery in Browning. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
