Garnet Skiles

Garnet Skiles, 91, of Colchester, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at 8:50 a.m. at Argyle Lake Nursing Center in Colchester.

She was born May 9, 1906, in Dallas, Iowa, a daughter of James Archibald and Cynthia Ellen Fortune Clark. She married Rev. Donald Skiles on Nov. 6, 1924 in Ridgeville Church in Browning. He survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Evangeline) Allen of Moorpark, Calif.; one grandson, David Allen of Tyler, Texas; one granddaughter, Joyce Forbes of St. Louis, Mo.; one great-grandson, Jonathon Allen of Tyler, Texas; and one sister, Carrie Clark of Knoxville, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.

She was a member of Assembly of God Church and a 30-year member of the W.C.T.U.

She was an ordained minister with the Assembly of God Church. Garnet and her husband pastored churches in Mount Ayr, Chariton, Conrad, Ames and Grinnell in Iowa and several churches in Illinois including Grafton, Palo Alto, Rushville, and Carthage. She began the church in Ames in 1936 and co-founded the church in Carthage in 1958. She enjoyed painting, playing mandolin and piano, and writing Christian poems and articles for publication in various national magazines.

Services will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m. at Astoria Assembly of God Church with Rev. Steve Adamson and Rev. Cliff Parry officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Burial will be in Ridgeville Cemetery near Browning.
