John W. Stone, 84, of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, formerly of Rushville and Browning, died at 7:50 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born Sept. 9, 1914, in Brown County, a son of Tilden and Melinda Crabtree Stone. He married Mary Elizabeth Egbert on June 18, 1941, in Palmyra, Mo. She died Sept. 30, 1990. He also was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Howard (Judith) Nation of Loami and Mrs. Mitchell (Sue) Corey of Macomb; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Klinefelter of Kewanna, Ind.

He was a farmer in the Browning area for 45 years, retiring in 1990 when he moved to Rushville. A World War II Army veteran, he served in the Philippines from 1943 to 1945. He was a member of Browning Christian Church.

Services were held Thursday, Jan. 14, at Wood-Roby Funeral Chapel in Rushville with Rev. Mary Pearce officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery, where military rites were accorded by Schuyler American Legion Post 4.

Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
