Laston L. Smith, 76, of East Peoria, died at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 1996, at his daughter’s home in Farmington.

He was born Dec. 31, 1919, in Knapps Island, a son of Edward Frankling and Amanda June Widner Smith. He married Josephine Ellen Fisher on March 31, 1942, in Missouri. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Steven (Ruthie) Schnetzler of Farmington, Mrs. David (Patricia) Churchill of Carmel, Calif., and Mrs. William (Shirley) Pierce of Lincoln, Neb.; three sisters, Vada Carpenter of Havana, Thorsey Wright of Beardstown and Verla McMullen of Astoria; one brother, Herbert Smith of Missouri; and 11 grandchildren.

Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

He was a World War II Army veteran. He worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 35 years, retiring in 1982 from the layout department. He was a volunteer firefighter at Caterpillar Inc. He volunteered for Illinois Central College for 12 years and the Boy Scouts of America for 13 years. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in East Peoria, where he taught Sunday school for 30 years and was a member of the golf league.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at his church with Rev. David Graham and Rev. William Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington.
