Verla McMullen

Verla May McMullen, 83, of Astoria died at 2 p.m. July 24, 2006, at her home.

She was born April 2, 1923, in Knapp Island, Mason County, a daughter of Edward F. and Amanda J. Widner Smith. She married Russell W. McMullen on April 16, 1949, in Astoria. He died Nov. 23, 1998.

She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Cecil, Noal, Laston and Morrel Smith; and two sisters, Edie Rhoades and Thorsey Wright.

Surviving are one sister, Vada Carpenter of Havana; and one brother, Herbert (and Helen) Smith of St. Louis, Mo.

She worked at the defense plant in Hammond, Ind., for four years, farmed with her father until she was 18, then farmed with her husband. She also worked at a restaurant in Havana for many years.

She was a member of Astoria American Legion Auxiliary Post #25 and Havana VFW Auxiliary.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
