Orin Prater

Orin PraterOrin S. Prater, 83, of Sulphur, La., formerly of Astoria, died Nov. 23, 2008, at West Calcam Hospital in Sulphur.

He was born June 13, 1925, in Gladen, Mo., a son of James Garfield and Lula Belle Lewis Prater. He married Beverly Joyce Dean in 1947. He later married Gloria S. Hamilton Duckwiler on July 26, 1976, in Astoria. She preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 1994.

He also was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Dean Prater and Bill Duckwiler; one daughter, Darlene Ward; and nine brothers and sisters.

Surviving are three sons, Leroy (and Janice) Prater, James (and Darlene) Prater, both of Sulphur, La., and Clyde Prater of Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter, Brenda (and Bill) Cummings of Virginia; four stepsons, Gale (and Susan) Duckwiler, Raymond Duckwiler and Damon Duckwiler, all of Astoria, and Dennis (and Lisa) Duckwiler of Winter Garden, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Sandra Yocum of Naperville and Carol (and Neil) Lippold of Winter Garden, Fla.; one sister; 22 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

He worked in the timber as a logger. He also worked at Oscar Mayer Company in Beardstown, where he retired.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. Ken Peterson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home in Astoria. Burial will be in Summum Cemetery in Astoria.
