VeteranWayne Powell Sr.

Wayne L. Powell Sr., 72, of Canton, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Knoxville, Iowa.

He was born March 4, 1927, in Astoria, a son of Samuel and Josephine Smice Powell.

Surviving are one son, Wayne Jr. of Canton; three daughters, Josie Smith of Canton, Mae Crotts of Dunfermline and Mary Brush of Rushville; one sister, Betty Perryman of Georgia; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the 18th Infantry Division in Germany. He was a member of American Legion Post 16 for 50 years. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1984.

He was a self-employed painter.

Graveside services were held Monday in White Chapel Memory Gardens, where military rites were accorded. Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to his American Legion post or his VFW post.
