Former Resident Dies In Canton

Mrs. Josephine (Josie) Powell, 76, died Friday afternoon in the Canton Nursing Home, where she had been residing three months. She had lived in Canton four years and was an Astoria resident for several years.

Mrs. Powell was born Aug. 18, 1884, in Wafalo, Iowa, a daughter of John and Mary Jane Smice. In 1904 she was married in Grand View, Ia., to Samuel Powell, who died on April 24, 1958.

Surviving are six children, John Powell of Cuba, Theodore Curtis of Peoria, Mrs. Margaret Watkins of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Erma Illman of Lewistown, Mrs. Betty Bradbury of Mobile, Ala., and Wayne Leroy of Canton. 19 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and two brothers of Iowa also survive.

Funeral rites were conducted Monday in the Murphy Memorial home in Canton with burial in Greenwood cemetery.
