She was born Jan. 27, 1929, in LaBelle, Mo., a daughter of Hugh and Martha B. Calhoun Smith. She married James Owen on Feb. 21, 1947, in LaBelle, Mo. He preceded her in death on March 29, 2018.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Richard “Rick” Owen; one brother, Harland Smith; one sister, Martha Jean (and Delbert) Lay; and one grandson, Adam Maliongas.
Surviving are three children, Larry Owen (and partner Diana Rounds) of Rushville, Jeffrey Owen of Springfield and Elizabeth “Liz” (and Jon) Ingles of Camden; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was a graduate of LaBelle High School. In 1954, she and her family moved to Rushville from the Chicago area and worked beside her husband on the Hess Dairy Farm. She would later work for Culbertson Memorial Hospital, Schuyler Telephone and the Schuyler County Courthouse. She worked many years as a teller for Schuyler State Bank, retiring in 1994.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Rushville, where she sang in the choir.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with David Haney officiating. Burial will follow in the Rushville City Cemetery.
