John Oliver Dies At Age 85

John Serle Oliver, 85, of rural Astoria, died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 1990, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born Aug. 16, 1904, in Marietta, a son of James H. and Mary Ellen Stoke Oliver. He married Alice Lutz in August, 1927, in Missouri. She died on Sept. 9, 1968.

Surviving are three sons, Garland S. of Peoria, Carroll E. of Canton and Delford R. of Prescott, Ariz.; one daughter, R. Janiece Hammond of Macomb; two brothers, Kermit of Bushnell and James R. of Orlando, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

He farmed in the Marietta and New Philadelphia areas, and had been farming in Astoria since 1939.

He was a former member of the Point Pleasant United Methodist Church.

Services were to be at 2 p.m. today at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb, with Rev. Eldon Walters officiating. Burial was in Point Pleasant Cemetery near Marietta.

Memorials may be made to the Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch in Shelbina, Mo.
