John G. Nicol Former Newspaper Man, Dies At 82

John G. (Jack) Nicol, 82, of Astoria, died Wednesday noon, Jan. 31, at the Mason District hospital in Havana. He had been in ill health and had resided at a Nursing Home in Havana for the past few months.

Mr. Nicol was born Feb. 22, 1879 near Chenoa, a son of David and Betsy Duncan Nicol. He was married to Mable Erb in 1914. She preceded him in death on May 10, 1955. He was a member of Astoria Lodge No. 100, A.F. & A.M., Astoria Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Methodist Church.

Mr. Nicol, or Jack as he was known by his many friends, had resided in Astoria since 1914. He was a printer for 62 years and was employed by the late A. N. Price at the Argus-Searchlight office for more than 35 years, prior to his retirement several years ago.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Two brothers and one sister are deceased.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Astoria Methodist Church with Rev. Ronald Bula officiating. Burial was in the Astoria Cemetery.
