MABEL (ERB) NICOL

Well Known Woman Takes Own Life

This community was terribly shocked and grieved yesterday evening when the news spread that Mrs. Mabel Nicol had committed suicide by hanging herself in the basement of her home.

Her husband, John Nicol, part time employee at this printing office, went home shortly after six o’clock yesterday evening and was shocked to find his wife hanging in the basement of his home. From indications, she had stood on a box, tied a clothes line around an overhead furnace pipe, then stepped off the box.

Mrs. Nicol had been in failing health for the past four months and it was reported that her eyesight was also failing, all of which it is presumed, preyed heavily upon her mind, causing her to commit the rash act.

The Fulton County Coroner will hold an inquest at 6 o’clock this evening at the Shawgo Memorial Home.

Mrs. Nicol was well and favorably known in Astoria, having been employed as telephone operator in the local exchange for forty-two years. Among us all she ranked always as a woman of culture, refinement, sympathy, a kind devoted wife, neighbor, and a true friend to all who knew her.

She was a member of the Eastern Star Order of Astoria.

Mabel Nicol was born on a farm west of Astoria, August 30, 1888, a daughter of Nelson and Lucinda Hess Erb. She spent her entire life in this vicinity. She was united in marriage to John Nicol on October 4, 1916. Besides her husband, she is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and a brother.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. C. W. Leonard. Burial in the Astoria cemetery.

Friends may call at the Shawgo Memorial Home until the hour of the services.
