Larry S. “Dog” Mitchell, 73, of Rushville died at 7:44 p.m. Jan. 5, 2010, in St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
He was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Ray, the son of Claire R. and Lois C. Sipes Mitchell. He married Sharon Elam in 1958 in Lewistown. He later married Patricia Parry McKinney on June 29, 1983, in Virginia. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother, Lois Mitchell of Macomb; one son, Joey L. Mitchell of Chicago; one daughter, Lora K. (and Bryan) Miller of Beardstown; one stepson, Eric (and Terri) McKinney of Peoria; one stepdaughter, Debbie (and Ric) Lyytinen of Yukon, Okla.; one sister, Susan Young of Vermont; three step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; and one infant son.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from June 2, 1954, to Oct. 22, 1957, on LST 827.
He was a member of Laborer’s Local #231 and retired from Illinois Valley Paving.
He was a member of Vermont Christian Church, Schuyler American Legion Post #4 and LST 325 Memorial Ship.
Cremation has been accorded. Inurnment with military honors will be held at Phillips Cemetery in Oakland Township, Schuyler County at a later date. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
