Mary McCanceMary L. McCance, 85, of Smithfield died at 3:24 a.m. Feb. 28, 2008, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Liverpool Township, Fulton County, a daughter of John W. and Pansy L. Phillips Grigsby. She first married Ira C. McCracken. He preceded her in death. She later married Dale C. McCance on Nov. 3, 1945, in Lewistown. He died Oct. 21, 1980.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Dale A. McCance; four brothers, and one sister.

Surviving are two sons, Robert W. (and Sherry) McCance of Marietta and John M. (and Sue) McCance of Cuba; four daughters, Linda J. McCracken-Shaver of Willcox, Ariz., K. Sue (and David) Roberts of Cuba, Arlene K. (and Harold) Ford of Geneseo and Darlene F. English of East Peoria; two brothers, Fredrick O. (and Joan) Grigsby of Cuba and Marshall E. (and Marge) Grigsby of Oregon State; one sister, Peggy A. (and Dan) Roach of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker. She also was a cook at Smithfield Grade School for many years, and she managed the Smithfield Coop Store.

She attended Brock United Methodist Church in Smithfield. She was a former member of Canton Moose Lodge. She volunteered at Red Brick School.

Services were held Monday at Henry Lange Memorial Home in Cuba with Rev. Ardith Corsaw officiating. Burial was in Baughman Cemetery in rural Smithfield.
