Richard H. McCombs, 71, of Astoria died at 2:08 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born April 29, 1934, in Browning, the son of James Reece and Garnet Marie (Hughes) McCombs. He married Virginia McCormick on Dec. 23, 1953, in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Lynn (and Walter) Longo of Havana and Judy (and Michael) Caputo of Rushville; two sons, Mark (and Cynthia) of Browning and Andy (and Gail) of Astoria; one sister, Charlotte Merrill of Astoria; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Timothy; and one sister, Ella Elizabeth McCombs.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1953 to 1955, and was a corporal (T) at Hq 5044 ASU Personnel Center in Fort Carson, Colo.

He was a farmer in the Sheldons Grove area, a general contractor, and was owner and operator of the Second Time Around in Astoria until his retirement in March 2004.

He was a former member of the Astoria Township Cemetery Association Board of Trustees from 1972 to 2002 and a former member of the Lewistown Mutual Insurance Board of Directors.

He attended Astoria Church of the Brethren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, with Pastor Gary Schultz officiating. Friends may call Friday after 4 p.m. at the memorial home. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by Astoria American Legion Post #25.

Memorials may be made to Cass-Schuyler Hospice, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association or Hughes Park in Astoria.
