Horace MarvelHorace D. Marvel, 80, of Peoria, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Kenney, a son of Walter C. and Gladys Hunt Marvel. He married Jonquil Joanne Plate on Nov. 14, 1948, in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Michelle (and Jay) Little of Rushville; one son, Michael of Aurora; two grandchildren; and one sister, Charlene Stolki of Fort Meyers, Fla.

He was preceded in death by an infant son.

He was a World War II Navy veteran.

He worked as an insurance salesman and office manager at Vekler Peyer for four years and later at S&H Green Stamp in Quincy for 12 years. He last was a teacher in the Quincy public school system from 1969 until retiring in 1989.

He graduated from Bradley University in 1948. He also attended Eureka College, Illinois State University and Columbia University in New York while in the Navy. He received a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., in 1971.

He was a member of the National Education Association and the Peoria Area Retired Teachers Association.

He was a member of First Methodist Church of Peoria.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, where visitation will be one hour before. The Revs. Beth McLaughlin and Paul Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by Astoria America Legion Post 25.

Memorials may be made to his church or First Methodist Church in Rushville.
