Lester MilesLester C. Miles, 80, of McAllen, Texas, died on Thursday, Feb. 8, 1996, at McAllen Medical Center.

He was born on Sept. 17, 1915, in Vermont, to Joseph Miles and Michel Cook Miles. He was one of eleven children whose father stated, “I have one of the largest tables in the world with fourteen miles and twenty-eight feet under my table.”

Surviving are Barbara, his wife of 56 years; two sisters, Ernestine Ingles of Vermont and Hope Ryan of Peoria; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He served four years in the Marines and four years in the 42nd Army Rainbow division. Lester and Barbara moved to the Valley from Lexington in 1946. He was a faithful member of many groups: Pharr United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer and in many other offices; O.E.S. 726; San Juan Lodge 1173; Hidalgo County Scottish Rite Club; Nomad Shrine Club, serving as a driver to the Houston hospital; volunteer at McAllen Medical Center; Kiwanis Club, serving as Lt. Governor; American Legion; and sponsored many scholarships. He retired from the Texas Highway Dept., and then went into real estate, owning Tropical Realty in McAllen. He received his SRA appraisal, and worked as an appraiser many years.

A memorial service was held at Pharr United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ernest Miller officiating. His body was given to the Medical School in San Antonio for research. The family request in lieu of usual remembrances donations be made to the Al Amin Transportation Fund, 2001 Suntide Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78409.
