Helen Mummert Dies Of Burns From Trash Fire

Mrs. Helen Mummert, 79, of 29 E. Hickory St., Canton, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, in Graham Hospital, following burns received Saturday, Nov. 20.

Mrs. Mummert suffered burns over about 80 per cent of her body when her clothing ignited as she was burning waste paper in her yard. Her death was ruled “accidentally sustained by burns” by a coroner’s jury at an inquest Friday evening.

Mrs. Mummert had resided in the Canton community since 1917. She was born in Pleasant Township, Oct. 19, 1886, a daughter of Milton and Rachel (Smith) Carter. On Oct. 17, 1911, she was married at Havana to Ellis H. Mummert, who died Sept. 29, 1965.

Six children surviving are Mrs. Margaret Smith and Russell Mummert, both of Canton; Mrs. Melba Barkley and Mrs. Barbara DeFord, both of Peoria; Mrs. Wilmadene McLaren, Mossville, and George Mummert, Indianapolis, Ind.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Mildred McMullen, East Moline.

A son, Guy, two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Murphy Memorial Home in Canton with Rev. Dale Wellbaum officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.
