Death of Edward McKinley

IPAVA — Edward McKinley a respected farmer of the Pleasant Ridge community, died at his home Monday morning, Dec. 9th at the age of 83. Death was caused from a stroke he suffered in 1938.

Mr. McKinley was born in Hamilton, Ohio, in July, 1857. He came to Illinois with his parents when 10 years of age. Mr. McKinley learned the blacksmith and carpenter trade and was an engineer at the McFadden elevator in Havana for 14 years. In 1882 he married Miss Ella Worth. They were the parents of five sons. Mrs. McKinley died years ago. In 1901 he married Mrs. Daisy Buckles, who has cared for him for almost three years. To this union three children were born.

In 1908 they bought a farm in the Pleasant Ridge vicinity where they have since resided.

Surviving children by his first marriage are George Edward, Albert and Clarence, all of Peoria; his second wife, still living and the three children, the Rev. Arthur McKinley and Clyde McKinley of Pekin, Mrs. Nellie Downing of Pleasant Ridge. Harry Buckles of Easton is a stepson. They also raised a grandson, Floyd Buckles. There are 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a sister, Mrs. Bertha Lyle and a brother, William E. McKinley of Alton.

Last rites were held Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Zimmerman chapel in Lewistown, the Rev. Valentine officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Edd Ferguson sang two of his favorite hymns. Burial in the Lewistown cemetery.

[Laura’s note: I don’t know if there are two sons from his first marriage named George and Edward, and the comma was mistakenly omitted in the published obituary, or if both names belong to one person. The 1890 census might have helped clear up this question, but, well … we’re sadly out of luck on that option.]
