Former Astoria Lady Dies At Cuba Funeral Sunday

Mrs. Martha Marquis, a highly respected and aged lady, passed to the great beyond Thursday morning at 3:30 a.m., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Krout in Cuba.

The deceased was born in Schuyler county, Nov. 4, 1837, and at the time of her death was aged 85 years, two months and twenty-one days. Death was due to pneumonia and complications, being ill for about eight weeks.

The deceased was the daughter of William and Rebecca Wright. About sixty-five years ago a romance began which ended in her marriage with Solomon Marquis, who preceded her in everlasting sleep twenty-five years ago. To this union eleven children were born, one daughter, Mrs. W. A. Ewing, passed away about twenty-six years ago. Those surviving are: John, Douglass, Daniel, Mrs. W. S. Krout, all of Cuba; Mrs. D. C. Miller and Mrs. Jennie Fulk of Oregon, Illinois, E. S. Marquis of Huron, South Dakota, James, Miss Mary, and Mrs. R. W. Rockwell of Astoria. She is also survived by one brother, William Wright of Astoria and three sisters, Mrs. Mike Trone, Astoria, Mrs. Ellen Howe of Beardstown and Mrs. Nancy Adams of Peoria, together with thirty-one grandchildren and thirty-two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Marquis was a member of the Christian church and a constant follower and worshipper of her denomination. She resided in Astoria and Cuba for a number of years, and her death will be mourned by all who knew her. She was of five generations at the time of her death.

The body was brought here Sunday on the noon train and taken to the home of her daughter, Mary Marquis, where the funeral was held at two o’clock, conducted by Rev. L. A. Crown, assisted by Rev. Ella Niswonger. Burial in the Astoria cemetery.
