L. Mack Leighty, 89, of Vermont died at 3:35 a.m. Feb. 18, 2010, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Eldorado Township, McDonough County, the son of Ralph and Fern Nelson Leighty. He married Charlyne Smith on June 12, 1943. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lynn Schmitt of Springfield; one son, Joey (and Cindy) Leighty of Vermont; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Tana M. Hennings; and one sister, Laura Howard.

He was a Sergeant in the Army serving in the infantry as a radio operator specialist during World War II.

He farmed most of his life.

He was a member of West Prairie Church, a former member and served on the board of the Farm Bureau and served on Industry School Board.

Services were held Monday at his church with Rev. Ron Peters officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment was in Pennington Point Cemetery west of Adair with military rites conducted by Macomb American Legion.
