Kathryn Kays

Kathryn "Kay" L. Kays, 83, of Beardstown, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at her home.

She was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Beardstown, a daughter of Emil and Sadie Caldwell Wessel. She married Perry Franklin Kays on May 3, 1944, in Beardstown. He died Dec. 25, 1979.

She also was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Wessel; and two sisters, Christine Wessel and Margaret "Bib" Ingram.

Surviving are two daughters, Judith (and William) Degitz of Astoria and Mary (and Kim) Crisman of Rushville; two sons, Rick (and Sibby) and Michael (and Phyllis), both of Beardstown; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Beardstown High School in 1930 and from Our Savior's Nursing School in Jacksonville. She worked as a registered nurse in Beardstown at Elmwood Nursing Home and at Myers Nursing Home, where she retired in 1996.

She was a lifetime member of St. Alexius Catholic Church and the Altar Society at the church.

A funeral Mass was celebrated March 8 at her church with Rev. Eugene Weitzel officiating. A rosary service was held at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Burial was in the St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery.
