Gene HaggertyCharles E. “Gene” Haggerty, 87, of rural Smithfield died at 7:59 p.m. July 8, 2020, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Cuba, a son of Charles J. and Mary Rita Ford Haggerty. He married Iona Wells on April 2, 1965, in Checkrow. She survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Tina Payne-Reed of Smithfield, Carol Haggerty and Stacy Haggerty, both of Smithfield, and Sheryl (and Ralph) Kindhart of Plymouth; two brothers, Gary (and Brenda) Haggerty of Texas and Scott (and Pam) Haggerty of Ellisville; two sisters, Marie Ann Corsaw and Sharon Hinkley, both of Florida; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Andrew L. Payne Jr.; two grandchildren; four brothers; and two sisters.

He graduated from Cuba High School class of 1951. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict. He was a farmer and was the owner of Go-Go Trucking where he was an independent truck driver.

A graveside service was held Tuesday at Wiley Cemetery in rural Ellisville with Pastor Kevin Lingenfelter officiating. Military services were conducted by the Cuba American Legion Russell Smith Post 533. Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba was in charge of arrangements.
