J. Richard HolmesJ. Richard Holmes, 81, of Bath, died at 11:45 a.m. March 14, 2012, at Snyder's Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home in Rushville.

He was born Feb. 7, 1931, in Bath, a son of Frank Grover and Dolly Miller Holmes.

Surviving are three sons, Jerry L. (and Laurie) Holmes of Oregon and Daniel L. (and Karen) Holmes and Merle D. (and Karla) Holmes, both of Havana; three daughters, Connie L. (and Charles) Selby of Havana, Melanie J. Shores of Rushville and Jill C. Turner of Jacksonville; two brothers, Larry Holmes and Jimmy (and Carol) Holmes, both of Bath; one sister, Florene (Holmes) Williams of Havana; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Christian Turner and Steven Holmes; and nine siblings Gladys (Miller) Adkins, Francis (Holmes) Deford, Irene (Holmes) Deford, Deloris (Holmes) Dye, Maizie (Holmes) Nunn, Buddy Holmes, Maureen (Holmes) Gilmore, Marleen (Holmes) Linkenfelter and Bobby Holmes.

He grew up and lived in Bath most of his life. He came from a family of commercial fishermen of which he was a part. He also was a truck driver for many years and worked in different areas of Grand Island, but his favorite was carrying duck hunters by boat, from all over Illinois and many other states, out to places to hunt ducks and geese.

He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in California.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bath, AMVETS in Havana, American Duck Hunters Association, Illinois Duck and Goose Hunters Association and Ducks Unlimited.

Graveside services will be held at a later date at Bath Cemetery. Cremation has been accorded. Wood Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
