Kenneth HowerterKenneth G. Howerter, 77, of Lewistown died at 11:15 a.m. Jan. 12, 2008, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Lewistown, a son of Ralph and Katherine Sheets Howerter. He married Linda Sharp Hellyer on Aug. 26, 1977, in Carmi, and was formerly married to Doris Malott. She survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Cindy (and Brian) Kumer and Kenna (and Melvin) Swearingen, both of Lewistown, Kelli (and Terry) Perardi and Traci (and Don) Nelson, both of Naperville; two sons, Kevin (and Lisa) Howerter of Sylvania, Ohio, and Bill (and Diana) Hellyer of Wheeling; two brothers, Ralph (and Mary) Howerter of Havana and David (and Bonnie) Howerter of Lewistown; one sister, Melinda (and Leon) Wagner of Bernadotte; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Brooklyn, N.Y.

He was a coal miner and retired from AMAX Coal Mine in Vermont.

He was a member of Illinois Street Christian Church of Lewistown, Lewistown American Legion Post 1 and the coffee drinker’s league of Lewistown.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at his church with Rev. Ray Greenfield officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown with military services by his legion post and Lewistown VFW Post 5001. Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown is in charge of arrangements.
