Roger J. Holmes, 90, and Margaret E. Holmes, 85, of Cordell, Okla., formerly of Ipava, died at Cordell Senior Health Center in Cordell.

He died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, and she died April 23, 1992.

He was born July 20, 1908, in Ipava, a son of John and Grace Holmes. She was born Sept. 3, 1906, in Ipava, a daughter of Arthur and Winifred Brown.

They were married on Oct. 11, 1929, in St. Charles, Mo.

They are survived by two sons, David of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jim of Clinton, Okla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.

Mr. Holmes also is survived by one brother, John “Jack” of Creve Coeur, and one sister, Rosemary Butler of Lewistown.

Mrs. Holmes also is survived by one brother, David Brown of Peoria, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by one sister. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Mr. Holmes attended Brown’s Business College in Galesburg. He began working for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. in Quincy in 1929. He later was transferred to Beardstown, Mount Vernon and Champaign, retiring in 1963.

Mrs. Holmes, a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in home economics, taught home economics in Plymouth for one year. She later worked for the Montgomery Ward Co.

Graveside services for the couple with burial of ashes will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ipava Cemetery with Rev. Robert Reeise officiating. Cremation has been accorded. There will be no visitation. Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Cordell Senior Health Center.
