H. Eugene Hayes, 80, of Vermont, died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 1996, at his home.
He was born Aug. 24, 1915, in rural Vermont, a son of George and Della Phillips Hayes. He married Barbara Kost on Oct. 29, 1939, in St. Charles, Mo. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Jan A. Hayes of Macomb; one son, Tom Hayes of Ipava; and two grandsons, Joshua Hayes and Weston Hayes, both of Ipava.
Two brothers preceded him in death.
He was a heavy equipment operator and was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 649 in Peoria for 46 years. He was a member of Vermont United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Vermont Cemetery with Rev. Tim Gilliland officiating and Masonic Rites by Vermont Lodge #116 AF&AM of which he was a member for 51 years.

Kost Memorial Home in Vermont was in charge of arrangements.
