Virgil Ross Hammond, 71, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Friday, Feb. 9, 1996.

He was born July 29, 1924, in Table Grove, a son of Clarence A. and Nellora Ross Hammond. He married Charlotte Schay. She survives.

He is also survived by one brother, Carroll A. Hammond of Galesburg; two sisters, Lenore Smith of Table Grove and Clara Nell Cochran of Bonita Springs, Fla.; three sons, Joel Wayne and Patrick Linn of Phoenix, and David Allen of Austin, Texas; three stepdaughters, Judy Fenkle, Robin Neuman and Janet Henderson; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was a longtime resident and businessman in the Phoenix area (Hammond Specialities). He was a lifetime member of American Legions Luke Greenway Post #1, Disabled American Veterans, and Phoenix Chapter #1.

Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at Hansen Chapel, 8314 N. 7th St., Phoenix, Ariz. at 11 a.m. followed by graveside services at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
